about

This song was inspired by the old-growth redwoods in the Henry Cowell State Park in Felton,California.

lyrics

Here the trees have grown for a thousand years
standing in this quiet space
high above the sun shines on the canopy
where the squirrels love to play and chase

Here the river sings its song
and ducklings hide among the reeds
here my children played when they they were small
at the feet of these majestic trees
beneath these trees

The call of the owl and the sigh of the wind
the laughter of the river running by
someday I may learn what the wild creatures know
someday I will find my wings and fly
I will fly

The trees can teach you how to breathe
and the ferns with their gentle leaves unfurling
the way the light moves through the leaves
you can feel the seasons turning
like coming home

The times when my heart becomes too weary
and the burdens seem impossible to bear
when the sorrow’s too deep for words to speak
I can find solace there
among these trees

The call of the owl and the sigh of the wind
the laughter of the river running by
someday I may learn what the wild creatures know
someday I will find my wings and fly
I will fly
